History: Lemon essential oil
rightfully belongs in every medicine, cleaning and spice cabinet. The juice and peel of the lemon are used as cooking seasonings
in countries worldwide. In Spain, lemon is considered a cure all - especially for infectious illnesses. Lemon has also been
used historically to help break fevers, such as those associated with malaria or typhoid. You may also remember from grade
school history lessons that it was used to fight scurvy aboard British ships (think Christopher Columbus). Common Uses: Lemon essential oil is great in drinking water to purify it (so when eating at
a restaurant, you're better off zesting the lemon rind into your water than squeezing the lemon juice) and can be diffused
to disinfect the air. It is good for colds, throat infections, asthma and fever (reduces). It's also good for indigestion,
heartburn and intestinal parasites. Lemon is beneficial to address many circulatory system issues like red and white
blood cell formation, blood pressure, soothing broken capillaries (which makes it good for varicose veins). It's wonderful
to improve memory and promote clarity of thought (students can use it while studying). In skincare, lemon is an astringent
that tones the skin as well as is an effective cleanser and and grease-fighter (also acne). Other health uses: cellulite,
gout, rheumatism, ureter infections, nervous conditions (anxiety), cleansing the hair and strengthening and hardening the
nails. Around the house, use lemon essential oil in dishwashing, removing gum, wood stain, oil and grease spots. Blends well with: Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Lime and other citrus oils, Fennel,
Frankincense, Geranium, Juniper, Peppermint, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang.
Cautions: Although it
is non-toxic, lemon essential oil is high in limonene and may result in "prickling" of sensitive skin. If this occurs,
dilute with olive (or other vegetable) oil. It also has the potential of photo sensitization - meaning that you should stay
out of the sun when using lemon essential oil because you may burn rather quickly.
